Effective Management of Digital Assets for the UK Police
“Efficiency & productivity gains must sustainably release people, equipment & technology, and money – which must then boost outputs or outcomes where the gain is made; be re-deployed elsewhere; or help balance the budget.” Home Office Efficiency & Productivity Strategy for the Police Service: 2008-11
SunGard Public Sector has developed a clear vision for the management of digital assets in the context of the UK Police.
There is potential for such a huge volume of data that a clear definition is required of strategic direction, approved at the highest level, as digital media can impact on every business unit in a force. BUT one of the key reasons for NOT doing anything is that it is unclear where the lines of responsibility are drawn. Clear distinctions need to be made between operational business units and supporting departments such as IT.
The current landscape can be characterised as a multitude of technologies feeding an array of systems focussed on supporting tactical operational need. There are some centrally produced guidelines on how to handle the data but little strategic direction to allow forces to define a digital roadmap.
SunGard’s vision will help a force develop such a roadmap to provide the following:
- Business operational improvement and process transformation leading to more efficient use of resources and data.
- Increase the effectiveness of the operation at the ‘frontline’ and in the ‘back office’
- Implementation of suitable technologies to support business operations
- Reduce costs of expansion and future developments by understanding the longer term business needs and taking this in to consideration when designing the first steps.
