Environmental

We recognize that every business organization has an impact on the local and global environment. As a global employer, we have many offices worldwide and are a substantial consumer of technology, energy to power our offices and data centers, and fuel to support global business travel. Through our Sustainability Policy, we encourage our employees and managers to take action in their workplaces and business operations to reduce energy consumption and waste, improve energy efficiency and use available technology to reduce business travel.

Carbon Footprint

The primary sources of our carbon footprint are the electricity that we use to power our data centers and office facilities, and the air travel that we undertake in the course of doing business. We track and report our carbon footprint using an environmental management system.

Energy Use and Efficiency

SunGard is a large consumer of electricity in our 5 million square feet of data center and operations space.  In our Availability Services business, we have retained American Energy to track and manage our utility bills in the U.S. and have installed Internet meters in the U.K.

With 3.2 million square feet of office space worldwide, we are making efforts to reduce our energy consumption through more efficient operation, maintenance and use of space. Several of our large offices have undergone energy audits to identify opportunities for energy efficiency. We do not publish detailed analyses of our utility bills but we do report an estimate of the greenhouse-gas emissions associated with our energy consumption through our annual sustainability report and the Carbon Disclosure Project.

Partnerships

We are members of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, the Corporate EcoForum and The Green Grid.

We are a signatory to the Bali, Poznan and Copenhagen communiqués of the Prince of Wales’s Corporate Leaders Group on Climate Change and we are also partners with the Prince’s Rainforest Project.

We have also worked with the Environmental Defense Fund’s Climate Corps program as part of KKR’s Green Portfolio Program.

Sustainability Initiatives

For SunGard, sustainability is a matter of values. It is also a matter of competitiveness. Our customers and stakeholders are increasingly affected by sustainability issues such as climate change, energy efficiency and other resource constraints. We are dedicated to sustainable development as an integral part of the way we conduct business. In 2009, we continued to focus on reducing the energy consumption in our data centers. One of the key performance indicators we track is the Power Usage Efficiency (PUE) ratio, which indicates how energy efficient our data centers are.

In 2009, we developed an Office Energy Efficiency Handbook to support SunGard facilities managers in implementing energy efficiency initiatives in their offices. We worked with our real-estate managers to optimize the use of our space. By the end of 2009, we were able to reduce our overall real-estate portfolio by 424,000 square feet through consolidations, dispositions and sublets. In New York, we consolidated nine separate offices into one location.
